Wir schreiben das Jahr 1860, als tausende von glücksuchenden Amerikanern aus dem Osten nach Wyoming zogen, wo der Staat jeder Familie, die das Land besiedelte, ein 640 Acres (ca. 260 Hektar) großes Stück Amerika versprach. So auch in einer idyllischen Ecke Crook Countys, wo die sogenannten "Homesteadler" ihr neues Zuhause "New Haven" ("Neuer Hafen") tauften. Hundert Jahre später waren die meisten Homesteads verschwunden. Durch Kauf, Betrug oder Mord sicherten sich die großen Rinderbarone das Land der Kleinrancher. So wuchs auch die New Haven Ranch auf das vierfache ihrer ursprünglichen Größe an, die Gebäude der vertriebenen Homesteadler verfielen und erinnern nur noch als Ghosttown an den früheren Wilden Westen.Heute ist New Haven eine Working Cattle Ranch, die in den Sommermonaten ca. 800 Rindern Unterkunft und Futter bietet.

In the year 1860, thousands of fortune seeking Americans came from the East to Wyoming, where the government promised 640 acres of America to every family that homesteaded the new frontier. Some chose a tranquil corner of Crook County where the homesteaders called their new home "New Haven". A hundred years later most of the homesteads have disappeared. Big cattle barons took the land from the small homesteaders through distress sales, cheating, and murder. In this way, New Haven expanded to four times its original size. The buildings and houses of the expelled homesteaders went to ruin. Only the New Haven ghost town signifies the old Wild West.These days, New Haven is a Working Cattle Ranch that range grazes 800 to 900 cattle during the summer. This gives you the opportunity to work with the cowboys and meet the life of the new, old wild west.

Die New Haven Ranch liegt im nordöstlichen Eck Wyomings, ca. 14 Meilen vom nächsten "größeren" Ort Hulett (429 Einwohner) entfernt. Der Ort New Haven, der auf allen amerikanischen Karten verzeichnet ist, besteht nur noch aus einer Geisterstadt, die auf der Ranch liegt und ihr den Namen gibt.2.700 acres von Canyons durchzogenes und licht bewaldetes Land bietet den achthundert Rindern, die dort im Sommer weiden, für einige Monate genügend Futter, um Gewicht anzusetzen.

The New Haven Ranch is uniquely located on the edge of the Black Hills, 18 miles from Hulett, Wyoming near the Devils Tower National Monument. It derives its name from the old ghost town of New Haven that lies on the ranch. The landscape converts from high plateau meadows, to timbered canyons and creek bottoms, and then flows out to the sagebrush prairie, all of which account for the wide variety of wildlife. Part of the ranch is used for growing hay but most of the country is too rough for farming. 800 to 900 cattle graze the pastures during the summer and keep the cowboys busy.The guest lodging is an early built western style log house with a large balcony. Most of the other ranch buildings date back to the days when the homesteaders first arrived in this country.The old houses were built out of rough wood planks and most of them went to ruin with time and weather. However, some of the buildings are being rebuilt and used for barns, shops, stables, and tack rooms.

Die Gäste wohnen in der "Lodge", die in vier Schlafzimmern Unterkunft für bis zu acht Personen bietet. Außer einem gemütlichen Wohnzimmer mit TV/Video steht den Gästen ein Billardtisch und ein Hottub (Whirlpool) zur Verfügung. Eine große Veranda mit Aussicht auf die Missouri Buttes lädt zum Relaxen oder Barbecue ein.
Die Küche ist frei zugänglich - für den kleinen Hunger zwischendurch ist jeder eingeladen, sich am Kühlschrank selbst zu bedienen.

The ranch lodge offers space for up to eight guests in four bedrooms. It is a log sided building decorated with western art and a congenial atmosphere. The large balcony with a gorgeous panoramic view lends itself to barbecues and relaxing. Or loosen up with a good soaking in the outdoor hot tub after a long day of horse back riding and cattle work.
The kitchen is open for everybody and the guests are welcome to help themselves to a snack between meals. There is also a pool table, horse shoe pit, playing cards, and lots of fun!

Ranchleben kann nicht geplant werden, jeder Tag verläuft anders und Pläne können nur kurzfristig gemacht werden. Während auf allen anderen Ranches ein Sommerloch in Sachen Rinderarbeit herrscht dreht sich in New Haven im Juli/August alles um 800 Rinder, die sich dort einige Pfunde anfressen, bevor sie in ein "Feedlot" (Korrals zum weiteren Mästen) gebracht werden, um dann nach einigen Monaten in den Verkauf zu gehen. In diesen Monaten gibt es viel zu tun: die Rinder werden wöchentlich auf neue Weiden getrieben, wobei immer welche übersehen werden und am nächsten Tag gefunden werden müssen. Zudem muß täglich nach entlaufenen Tieren gesucht und die Zäune und Wasserlöcher gecheckt werden.Im Mai/Juni ist Brandingzeit - die Rancher kennzeichnen und impfen ihre im Frühjahr geborenen Kälber. Brandings sind harte Arbeit und soziales Ereignis zugleich - die Nachbarn helfen sich gegenseitig und sind für jede helfende Hand dankbar. Auch die New Haven Ranch ist zu allen Brandings und den anschliessenden Mahlzeiten im Kreise der Cowboys eine gern gesehene Hilfe.

And what’s happening next? Well first lets wrangle the horses. While summer cattle work on most ranches is a bit infrequent, the New Haven Ranch is especially busy with 800 to 900 head of grass cattle that need to graze the entire ranch before fall shipping sends them to the feedlot. There is a lot of activity during these months: The cattle are moved to fresh pasture every few days and then each pasture has to be recheck to gather cattle missed in the first roundup. It is a daily job to check the water holes, look for sick cattle, gather strays and find and repair damaged fence. May and June is branding season. The rancher rope, mark and vaccinate their spring born calves. Brandings are a social event that makes a hard job a sporting event. The neighbors gather to help each other and appreciate any help they can get in return. The New Haven Ranch and their guests go to the brandings and the following meals with the cowboys. And are always welcome help - here every cowboy is needed!
