The well trained westernhorse, after my opinion likewise the reliable leisure horse, should know the control of "Neck Reining". It means, the forehand of our horse is "pushed" by the slack outer rein, which is put at the neck. In a right curve, for example, one puts the left rein to the horse neck, and the horse, and/or the head, neck and the shoulder of the horse, "are pushed" by this easy contact into the desired direction. Thus one receives control, which is more appropriate for the horse, as the employment of the direct rein on the inside is. I do not know a horse, also none of the classic ridden ones, changed over to western-training, which could not be ridden willingly "neck reined". As soon as the horse recognized the fact that this kind of aid giving is the more pleasant, it will more and more accept it. The "Neck Reining" forms the basis for riding single handed. In this maneuver, the rein is used only as an assistance at the neck, in no case the bit "is operated" here. A condition for learning the "Neck Reining" is, a horse. Fun aside, some Horsemen teach to their horses, already very young, to yield from the soil, the Longe or a cord. That is very welcome for young horses, experience shows, young horses learn particularly fast. This shows, basis are more or less the acceptance as well as obedience of the horse to humans. ZFirst we move our horse forward. Then, if we want to go to the right, I put the left rein to the neck of the horse. As long as the horse does not understand this assistance and does not know it's meaning, it will not react. Thus we take up the inner rein and pull it slightly, an aid, that the horse already knows it. To horses , which are accustomed at weight or thigh aids, we still give these assistances additionally. We can make horses, which do not know these aids yet, familiar with weight and thigh assistance at this point. As soon as the horse gets in the turn only a little bit, I take away all assistance and let i go straight forward again.. I do not ride 180 turns at the beginning, perhaps I turn the horse around 10 to 20 degrees, then I let it walk straight again . It's important that the rein at the neck is the first assistance, that introduces the whole maneuver. If my horse does not react yet to this rein-operation, I give the "used assistances" in addition, before I terminate the maneuver,I terminate first the "used assistances" and after that I take the rein off the neck. Is the horse used to neck reining in walk and little turns, I start to ride 180 up to 360 turns. If the maneuver works, one makes the radius of the idioms smaller and rides so-called figure-8s. After approximately 2 weeks, thus, approx. 10-12 training hours, the horse should be so far to go the exercise sequence specified above, also in the jog. Only if the jog-training works perfectly, one tries the same thing in lope.
